DKD – Future Rage (Dr Who Dat Remix)

First admission: Jneiro Jarel aka Dr Who Dat? is one of my all-time favourite producers.

Second admission: i’ve been aware of this remix for close to 10 years but it’s taken me this long to track down a full version. Anway, a bit of background:

DKD was a group made up of three of the leading lights in the UK Broken Beat scene: Dego of 4Hero, Daz-I-Kue of Bugz In The Attic and Kaidi Tatham of Bugz/Neon Phusion. They released an album in 2003 called Future Rage that was equal parts funky, soulful and dancefloor friendly. If you’re not hip to Broken Beat just trust me and go listen to some YouTube playlists, you’ll love it.

This remix however is a bit of an anomaly. The track “Brighter Day” appears on the album but was never issued as a single, so there were no remixes available. The only single from the Future Rage album was the title track itself, so it begs the question: what’s the deal with this one? Is it an unofficial rework? A remix for a planned vinyl release that never happened? Outside of a few DJ mixes (most no longer online) the only actual record you’ll find it on is a compilation CD created for a restaurant in Montreal, Canada…go figure.

Regardless of the intent, this is one of my favourite remixes anywhere. I’m a sucker for Fender Rhodes and finger snaps so no surprises in finding those elements here in healthy does. Jneiro’s production take the mellow vibe of the original and transforms it into something far more dancefloor friendly, supported by 4/4 kick drums and deep moog bass. If this had made a 12″ release back in the day it would have been in regular club rotation. Let’s hope that more people get hip to this one.

Where can I find a copy? You’ve got 2 options:

  1. This Jneiro Jarel guest mix for BTS Radio in 2007
  2. The 2005 Globe Restuarant CD compilation “La Collection” – find it on Discogs here
