Jamael Dean – Oblivion
To say I was excited to hear this one is an understatement. Jamael Dean’s Black Space Tapes was a personal highlight of 2019 for me, so to get another project so soon is a blessing.
For his latest record, Jamael puts his synths and drum machines to one side and lets the piano do the talking. The first 30 seconds of opener “People of The Moon” had me instantly hooked, with piano runs that remind me of Joe Bonner’s early 70s tenure with Pharoah Sanders. The whole record is brimming with soulful, spiritual energy from start to finish…the jazz fans amongst you will particularly appreciate the Wayne Shorter cover that rounds things out.
If you’re jazz fan, this should be an essential 2020 purchase. If you’re not, then you should probably sit down and listen to this anyway. It’s good music.
