Mike Slott – Boxed In (featuring DistantStarr)

Mike Slott is an icon of the early beat scene. As one half of Heralds of Change (with Hudson Mohawke) and a co-founder of the LuckyMe collective, he was an integral part of the growing instrumental scene in the mid to late-00s (& he’s still doing his damn thing to this day by the way).

This joint dates back to 2008 when it was appeared as part of Fresh Selects’ “Loose Joints” compilation (archive post here), around the same time that Mike dropped his first solo 7″ releases via All City. It’s a great example of Mike Slott’s signature soulful, slightly off-kilter sound in that era. Having one of my favourite emcees (DistantStarr) on there too is the icing on the cake. Mike’s music is a perfect fit for Starr’s clever wordplay. 12 years on and I still play this track all the damn time.

It’s a shame this one never made it to an official release, I would’ve scooped it up in a second.
